Halloween Candy Buy Back

Halloween Candy Buy Back Newsletter #4

We are building momentum across the country with the numbers of offices that are planning this wonderful event. Here’s an e-mail message from Dr. David Jones with some great ideas. I encourage all of you to keep sending me your stories like this. They help everyone!

Chris,

Thought I'd share so
me of our experiences so far.  We've made up a flyer and started talking to patients and select friends of the practice already.  From this we've added two restaurants that will give a free kids meal; a local Mexican "El Chico's" and McDonalds is giving a free cheeseburger.  We've always had the coupons from McDonalds but they are coming on board to support this great idea!

Also, one of my adult patients called the local newspaper writer of these kinds of human interest stories and she is coming out to get a story about this.  That was last week.  Now that same patient wants to be one of the sponsors of the money too!  This has all transpired since Wednesday of last week, and we only work Mon-Thur.

We have the press release and flyer out on the front desk and everyone that comes in comments on this great idea.  Thanks so much for sharing this with us all. . .  this is a win-win-win!!!

If you would like to inform all of your patients about your upcoming Halloween Candy Buy Back event, here is a sample letter you could send.  This will get your patients interested in the event and spreading the word too!  Your community will see you as taking an active role and interest in the health of young people and supporting our nation's armed forces in a “taste of home” kind of way. You will experience your “buzz” increasing daily.

September 5, 2007

Dear Moms and Dads,

Halloween is coming, and normally it’s hard for your dentist to get excited about that day because of all the candy your kids will eat. However, this year will be different. Don’t you just wish that on the day after Halloween that your kids’ sacks full of candy would just disappear? Well we can help, and this is something we are very excited about!  This year we’ll buy the candy back from your kids. We’re not kidding! Sure, they can have a few treats on Halloween night and maybe even keep a couple more for later in the week. But we’ll take the rest of it and pay them for it! The candy will be shipped overseas to our courageous troops (who could sure use a treat or two!) serving our country in the Middle East . In return, we’ll give your kids $1 per pound of donated candy and a Firefly flashing toothbrush.

Global sugar consumption for kids increases by about 2% annually and currently sits at 50 million tons per year, which means parents need to be very watchful now more than ever before. Too much candy can lead to hyperactivity and weight gain, as well as cavities or worse. In some cases, the wrong types of candy can also lead to broken teeth and damaged braces.

Kids should still dress up, go out, have fun, and yes, even eat some candy. But after picking out the best of their stash, they will probably have about 10 pounds left, and nobody needs that much candy!

Bring your kids and your candy in on November 1 between 3:30 and 5:00 p.m., and spread the word!

Sincerely,

Dr. Chris Kammer
